The pressurised environment of a plane is an unnatural environment for the skin and so you lose moisture from your skin, leaving it looking dehydrated and dull. Add that to the anxiety factor leading to an increase in stress hormones which cause redness, inflammation and acne. Eye-irritating allergens are in the air and increased exposure to bacteria is a recipe for a skin disaster if you haven’t “Plane Prepared” before, after and during a flight.
Here's how to take care of your skin before, after and during a flight:
1) Moisturise and hydrate the night before your flight. Choose a body lotion that is nourishing and will pack on the hydration, such as Delarom Moisturising Body Lotion. This moisturising body lotion is a subtle blend of passion flower and Apricot Oil, both known for their remarkable moisturising properties. RRP €26
2) Go minimal with your makeup. Going on a plane with clean, makeup-free skin is always your best bet. Oil and dead skin cells clog pores and result in blemishes. You can get by with using a hydrating mist over light makeup every hour on shorter flights such as Uriage Eau Thermale Spray 50ml RRP €5
3) Wear 100% cotton clothing to prevent rashes on your body. This beauty hack is to wear loose-fitting, cotton clothes as these are better than rayon or nylon and have the added benefit of allowing the skin to breathe.
4) Don't skip SPF. You're being exposed to UV rays through plane windows, so find a moisturiser that not only hydrates but also will give you SPF protection such as Uriage Light Water Cream SPF20.
5) Stick to water. Kick starting the holiday early with alcohol may seem like one of the only small pleasures available on-board, but you'll feel and look your best if you resist this temptation.
6) Gently exfoliate and moisturize post-flight. After landing, use a beauty vinegar to wipe skin clean of pollutants, such as Roger & Gallet’s Aura Mirabilis Beauty Vinegar RRP €20 which clarifies and refreshes skin’s complexion. Then reapply a light, moisturiser such as Roger & Gallet’s Aura Mirabilis Legendary Cream RRP €45 to help hold the moisture in.
