SPF Essentials for the hottest week of the year! ☀

WITH temperatures in Ireland set to reach as high as 29 degrees over the coming days, it is important that we take measures to protect our skin. It is especially important to protect babies and children, as much of the UV damage that leads to skin cancer takes place in the early years of life. Research has shown that getting sunburnt in childhood or adolescence can increase the risk of melanoma – the most serious form of skin cancer.

I know we all love tanned skin, but tanned skin is damaged skin. My advice for the super hot weather we have coming in is the following : seeking shade between 11am and 3pm, covering up by wearing a shirt with a collar and long shorts; wearing a hat that gives shade to the face, neck and ears and sunglasses that give UV protection. Use sunscreen with SPF higher than 30 and UVA protection, 20 minutes before going outside, and re-apply every two hours. Babies under six months should be kept out of the sun.
